Why Use Pex Plumbing?

PEX (cross-linked polyethylene) is a type of plastic tubing used in both plumbing and heating applications. PEX has been installed in Europe for over 30 years, and its use has become widespread in the United States over the last 10 to 15 years. Because of its ease of installation, reliability, and relatively low cost, PEX is continuously growing in popularity.

Advantages of PEX Plumbing

Cost Effective: PEX tubing is less expensive than copper pipe and installation time is reduced because fewer fittings are required.

Easy to Install: PEX piping is easy to install because it requires less fittings than copper tubing and the flexibility of PEX allows 90 degree turns without the need for elbow fittings. PEX tubing unrolled from spools can be installed in long runs without the need for coupling fittings. PEX pipes are also light weight and much easier for plumbers to work with, another aspect which will help to cut down on the installation time.

Corrosion & Freeze Resistant: PEX resists the scale build-up common with copper pipe, and does not pit or corrode when exposed to acidic water. PEX is more resistant to freeze-breakage than copper or rigid plastic pipe.

Fewer Leaks: PEX plumbing installations require fewer fittings than rigid piping. This means there is less likelihood for leaks to occur at joint connections.

Energy Efficient: PEX tubing does not transfer heat as readily as copper, and so it has energy saving capabilities.

PEX piping is not for outdoor use

While PEX pipes will resist freezing in the indoors, they cannot stand the frigid temperatures of some outdoor climates which is one reason they are not recommended for outdoor use. The other reason is that PEX pipes cannot be exposed to UV light because the rays can break down the material and cause it to fail.
